Silence #1 by Natasha Preston
- This book is a really quick one, about 200 pages but the subject is heavy. My issues with the book are 1st that the story felt rushed, 2nd the sudden change in pov & 3rd the subject is more so insinuated. Where the editors were, yo no se, but I guess that’s outside of the story so I won’t judge too harshly but this book did come off poorly written. Rated 4 stars on GR.
Broken Silence (Silence #2) by Natasha Preston
- It’s now 4 years later, Oakley’s back after having moved out of the country, her abusers are on trial which is all very melodramatic. Her used to be only/best friend turned boyfriend, then ex-boyfriend, is shocked & surprised to see her back in town. Evidence is missing, the trials getting stressful, the needed evidence is found, justice for Oakley finally then suddenly her used to be ex-boyfriend turned boyfriend again is arrested for his relations with her while she was 15 & he 18 but the town rallying behind them gets him off without a single charge, real believable. Happy ending with the now, obviously, divorced mom moving in with her new love, Oakely and Cole together in love & pregnant in their new home. Rated 4 stars on GR for the authors effort to wrap this story up in a perfect bow at the end.
Awake by Natasha Preston
- I’m beginning to think the grammatical errors in Natasha Preston’s books are some kind of inside joke. That aside, the plot felt predictable & not being able to remember things prior to the age of 4 is such a miniscule detail to latch on to as this red flag of something amiss. At about 300 pages it’s another quick read, another happy-is ending. Rated 4 stars on GR.
1984 by George Orwell
- Yes I did read this book in 8th grade, no I didn’t care for it then, no I didn’t care for it now. I don’t get the hype, especially not now in modern times. The story feels dated, a dated future. Rated a generous 3 stars on GR.
Another Day (Every Day #2) by David Levithan
- I read this book in just under 2 weeks, ultimately rated only 3 stars on GR. I’m not sure how I expected more from this story, I can’t say if I expected some kind of solution or answer or I don’t know but this was just a lot of the same back & forth repackaged in a new skin. Get it, in a new skin, anyway this book felt repetitive & I still don’t know how I feel about ‘A’ engaging in a relationship. & yes, I do know this is a retelling from Rhiannon’s pov but still.
Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo
- This book has many a panties in bunches, on both male & female asses. A lot of people simply don’t want the truth of the white supremacists history in the country. Somehow speaking about the racist things that happened & how they shaped, facilitated & continue to influence the society we live in now is divisive & racist. Every other history needs to be remembered & talked about EXCEPT for the many atrocities of white america, those of course need to be let go & “left in the past”. In the end you can’t change history, rated 4 stars on GR.
Someday (Everyday #3) by David Levithan
- & now it’s gone on too long. Not that I disliked the book, this just felt unnecessary, a third book just to have a 3rd. I loved the days of ‘A’ just enjoying the day, but the sudden dangerous drama seemed out of place. The idea of who knows how many other ‘A’s out in the world also moving from body to body felt off too. Three books down & no real answers, didn’t like that, still a good story. Rated 4 stars on GR.
Mr. Penumbra’s 24- Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore #1) by Robin Sloan
- 5 stars. I loved this book & would love to see it on screen. I was expecting a story about a magical bookstore & for most of the book I continued to believe that’s what it was, it wasn’t. I really don’t want to spoil anything of this book because it’s so good & it’s not what you’d expect in the end. It’s a short book just over 200 pages with an underlying message about life & legacy.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
- I did read the book after having began the show so of course I was immediately pointing out the differences & changes, alas I couldn’t help myself. To me the book was better, even though the show wasn’t bad either. The story of Mia & Pearl’s time in Shaker Heights & what led up their departure a short time later is full of secrets, all slowly exposed. Finished in under a week & rated 4 stars on GR.
Everything I Never told You by Celeste Ng
- I enjoyed the pov’s jumping back & forth between past & present in this story, & the character detail made it easy to walk into the pages & really picture the story. While the stories main plot is Lydia Lee’s death, Celeste Ng wrote a dynamic story about a family dealing with the disappearance of a daughter/sister & ultimately dealing with the reality that she is dead. Rated 4 stars on GR.
Debt: The First 5,000 Years by David Graeber
- Boring but informative, although I guess it’s not meant to be a fun distraction from the real world kind of book. Rated 3 stars on GR.
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare
- I can’t get enough of Cassandra Clare’s books, this series & The Last Hours series are the last I need to finish all of her books, obsessed you might say. I hate so much that both movie & show dropped the ball on the overall story. It’s a little hard to keep up, these books are all so long, there are so many characters & a large tangled web of activities, I feel like I need notes to stay on track! Nonetheless, Cassandra Clare knows how to write a good book. Rated 5 stars on GR.
Thanks for catching up with me – V
