This book was very much the “classic” small town girl running from her past murder mystery thriller. Let’s review…

Dear Daughter by Elizabeth Little
- Category – Murder Mystery Thriller
- Length – 364 Pages
- Read Time – 1 Day
- GR Rating – 3 Stars
Our main character Janie Jenkins, I don’t know why I hated this name no shade to the Janie’s of the world! I just idk, felt like it didn’t fit the whole scenario of this characters life it felt out of place idk, anyway; Janie Jenkins is released from prison 10 years after being convicted of her mothers murder, she has maintained her innocence throughout her sentence. Released due to a technical error, the possible mishandling of evidence, she sets out to find who actually murdered her mother & why.
This seems like the kind of story that would require quite a bit of super sleuthing, it’s not like a 10 year old murder is going to solve itself, but it actually kind of does. I was expecting some deep dive investigations by Janie & sure maybe she did spend the 10 years she was in prison trying to collect whatever information she could about her mother & her hidden past but it seemed like the most pertinent clues kind of just fell into her lap. It felt almost like she just so happened to end up in the right place at the right time & luck was fully on her side. Despite her mother running away from & hiding her past from her daughter, Janie somehow manages to unravel the whole plot basically over the weekend. In addition to trying to solve a murder, she also had to keep her identity hidden being that she is still quite popular in the media & the focus of an “investigative” podcast dedicated to ensuring she is brought to justice for her mothers murder. Janie’s mother was a very well-to-do socialite who liked living a life of extravagance & had several very wealthy husbands throughout it. Growing up in the wealthy limelight Janie was no stranger to tabloids throughout her adolescence, making the murder of her mother & her conviction an instant media sensation.
Janie does end up figuring out not only what happened the day of her mothers death but also the events of the past that led to her mother running from home. She uncovers the true killer, the motive & a few other family secrets along the way. Despite how rushed this story felt I still enjoyed the book.
