Review: Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

This book has been picked up for TV adaptation, set to debut on Netflix, Friday June 7th 2024. I really liked this book, it felt so real & relatable in many ways, I hope this tv adaptation does not disappoint! I will definitely be tuning in but for now, review.

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

  • Category – Contemporary Fiction
  • Length – 330 Pages
  • Read Time – 2 Days
  • GR Rating – 4 Stars

This book reads like a real & raw, young adult coming of age, our protagonist is young, beautiful, hard-working, ambitious & like many young adults still finding herself while trying to navigate everyday life in a stressful work environment & bustling city.

Twenty-five year old Jamaican-British Queenie Jenkins, lives in London, working at a successful national newspaper. Queenie struggles with feeling other’d at work, with feelings of straddling two cultures neither of which she feels she truly fully fits into & with the men in her intimate life. As we follow Queenie’s day to day we meet her solid friend group, “the Corgis”, as they help her & each other navigate being 20-something. A few bad male decisions are made but we won’t judge, mistakes happen, she lives she learns. While this book is reminiscent of Bridget Jones Diary, as many reviews suggest, underneath the witty playful banter between ‘the Corgis’ & Queenies light-hearted self-criticism inner monologues lies the undercurrent of racism, sexism, mental health & clashing cultural differences.

A tense break-up with her long-time boyfriend Tom becomes the catalyst for her string of man mistakes, despite Tom being a jerk who was blind to his families barely covert racism towards Queenie, the breakup is a blow to her self-esteem propelling her towards bad decisions. This book reads modern & real, the friendships, situationships & family relationships feel believable, the characters are dynamic & dealing with real topics.

I really liked this book, rated 4 stars, it was a funny, raw & real modern young adult journey of self-discovery. Can’t wait to watch the Netflix short series & see how Queenie transitions to the screen. Thank you for joining me for another review, happy reading!
