This book is a mind-f*ck!

This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno

I could not stop reading once I started, the pace of this book is addicting, I had to keep turning the pages, had to find out what happened next. Now I will say that was partly because I wasn’t sure what the actual f*ck was going on & desperately needed clarity but also, also because the story telling was just that good. Was Thiago being haunted by some evil entity? Was he suffering with a mental health break? Was it grief haunting his heart causing him to have a mental breakdown? I don’t know! & that is partly why this book sits on my re-read shelf.
Thiago & his wife Vera begin experiencing strange unexplainable occurrences in their apartment, Vera believes it to be paranormal while Thiago is skeptical, at first. After getting an Itza “the worlds most advanced artificial intelligence speaker” the strange occurrences drastically escalate from small weird noises & feelings around the apartment to hauntings leading to death.

“When you died I mourned you, but also the version of myself I was with you.”
― Gus Moreno
What started as faint scratching noises in the walls, cold spots around the house & the subtle feeling that something wasn’t right, ended with Vera dead. After many nights of Itza talking seemingly to itself, randomly playing loud music or cryptic messages & strange deliveries for things never ordered, Thiago decides to unplug & get rid of Itza but it’s far too little too late & things will never go back to normal.
After Vera’s death Thiago is consumed by the grief. Unable to cope with the constant reminders of Vera, the barrage of well meaning communications & the continued strange occurrences he decides he has to escape & heads to a secluded cabin in Colorado. But quickly discovers the thing haunting him didn’t stay behind in Chicago & isn’t letting him go.
I hadn’t read much horror prior to this book & it definitely cemented my love for the genre. The horror was woven into the very atmosphere creating an uneasy feeling throughout the story. Ultimately rated 4 stars, & instantly added to my very small re-read shelf, highly recommend. Thank you for joining me for another review & happy reading.
