Review: You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose

It’s rare that a book make my eyebrows go up in surprise, this one did it. I won’t give the twist away because it’s just too good & without it the book would fall kind of flat, in my humble opinion. Anyway, lets get into this review!

You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose

  • Category – Suspense Mystery Thriller
  • Length – 350 Pages
  • Read Time – 1 Day
  • GR Rating – 4 Stars

In this suspense thriller we find ourselves in a remote cabin in the Wyoming mountains with our main character Grace Evans, escaping the everyday hustle & bustle of her working New York mom life with a quiet 10-day getaway. Traveling alone, the thick tension is present pretty early on when an uncomfortable incident at a gas station just outside of her destination town puts Grace on high alert.

Arriving & settling into her temporary abode, she finds her host Calvin Wells handsome & charming. Calvin lives in the cabin, his family ranch, caring for his animals & small farm he lives a mostly secluded & quiet life. Getting to know each other over dinner, Graces’ unease continues to grow as small inconsistencies begin to cast shadows of doubt on Calvin & his reclusive good guy persona. However, committed to enjoying her get-away Grace chooses to ignore the red flags, telling herself she is simply being paranoid & continues growing closer to Calvin. Using her leisured time to read, explore the cabin & surrounding woods & taking a trip to the near by town on a quick shopping excursion. While at the town Grace interacts with some locals, all whom of course know Calvin, learning a little about his family & past.

The middle of this book very much reads like so many other “unsuspecting victim stumbling into a serial killers intricately planned trap while minding her business just trying to enjoy living her life” books, I couldn’t stop myself from rolling my eyes at Grace for making stereotypical mistakes, fulfilling the “pretty female victim” trope.

Plot twist. This twist could’ve been so much more impactful, without it I would’ve rated this book 3 stars.

In the end she doesn’t die! She’s a survivor, she’s surviving & then some! Making her way back to New York, Grace recaps the events of the last 10-days, providing some additional context to tie everything together. The book ends with our protagonist arriving home to her awaiting family, wondering when her next get-away will be.

Ultimately I rated this book 4 stars, because although it fell flat in the middle there for a while the twist carried that 4th star all alone. Thank you for joining me for another review, as always happy reading.
