How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
- Category – Horror Fiction Thriller
- Length – 448 Pages
- Read Time – 5 Days
- GR Rating – 3 Stars
This was a cover buy & sale buy & wasn’t expecting the direction the story went in. Honestly, I kept thinking it had to be satire, right?
This story revolves around siblings Louise & Mark, mostly Louise as she is the narrator, we’re getting this story from her pov. After both of her parents die Louise is forced to return to her hometown, to her parents home to make final arrangements. There’s obvious tension between the siblings & as the story progresses we learn why thru flashbacks of Louises memories. There is an entity, or several entities I’m really not sure, haunting this family, creating chaos. Things get strange in the house quickly after Louises’ arrival, noises coming from the attic where there sound be still silence, things being moved or missing when no one could’ve moved them without being noticed, that creepy feeling of being watched from dark corners.
I kept thinking this book has to be satire because the whole haunting plot was just so ridiculous to me that I couldn’t fathom it actually being horror. Spoiler? It’s haunted puppet dolls, a haunted homemade hand puppet is the big bag scary thing here. I also rolled my eyes heavily at the idea of Chucky, it’s just so far into the realm of absurdity that it feels silly to me, so this book is not unique in that way.
The siblings have to deal with their childhood traumas with each other & with their parents to get to the bottom of this haunting & try to find a way out. In the end they do, they work out their differences, comparing notes about their childhood, individual experiences with their parents & together as each remembers it. This however requires the haunting to reach extremes, which is also the point in the book that I became convinced it had to be satire.
