This book was on my tbr list for so long & admittedly I really only got around to reading it now because I want to watch the HBO adaptation, although I’ve finished the book some weeks ago & still haven’t started the show haha. Anyway, because this book was on my tbr for so many years before I finally got around to reading it I was completely unprepared for the story, going into this read without rereading the synopsis or anything. Let’s review!

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
- Category – Crime Suspense Mystery
- Length – 254 Pages
- Read Time – 2 Days
- GR Rating – 4 Stars
Camille Preaker is sent by her boss to investigate & report on the disappearance of two young girls in her home town of Wind Gap, Missouri. Tensions run high as she returns to stay in her childhood home while in town, a tumultuous relationship with her mother & non-existent relationship with her 13 year old half-sister, Amma, whom she barely even knows bringing her no comfort. Recently released from a psychiatric hospital Camille is having a difficult time in her own life, battling years of childhood trauma & carrying those scars into adulthood.
Being a small usually quiet town, the residents of Wind Gap are horrified & dismayed, not only because there’s a murderer on the loose but also because of the horrific nature in which the girls bodies were discovered. With all of their teeth removed both girls were strangled to death & left in public places to be found by unsuspecting passers by. Working with a detective on the case Richard, Camille uncovers what truly happened to these 2 young girls, Ann and Natalie.
The Preaker family is very wealthy & influential in Wind Gap, having been one of the towns founding families they are not only well known & well connected but somewhat feared. Told from Camille’s pov, snippets of her memories give us a glimpse into her childhood, who she was as a teen & traumas she endured. Traumas that as an adult she carries both the physical & mental scars of, riddled with anxiety, paranoia & depression, skin covered in self-inflicted scars meant to simultaneously remind & free her from herself. It’s tricky to know what can be trusted as truth when every tidbit of information is given to us thru the lens her past traumas, something that Camille herself is aware of. After all, she is paranoid… but does that mean she’s wrong.
The ambiance throughout this story is deeply sinister in a very quiet unassuming way, the very air the characters breath heavy with it. I was gripped through to the very end, ultimately rating this book 4 stars.
Thank you for joining me for another review, happy reading!
