Review: How to Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine

This book gave me a similar vibe to the movie ‘Happy Death Day’ starring Jessica Rothe. Quick disclaimer, despite my low rating of this book, I don’t think it was bad, just too young for me. It’s a quick read & despite the dark subject not heavy, let’s review.

How to Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine

  • Category – YA Horror Mystery Thriller
  • Length – 299 Pages
  • Read Time – 1 Day
  • GR Rating – 2 Stars

It’s been a year since Alice’s sister Claire Lawrence was murdered, now she’s freaking out a bit in the courthouse bathroom at the murder trial where she, the sole witness, is expected to testify.

Claire was the bubbly social butterfly sister while Alice was happiest at home watching & rewatching all her favorite horror movies. Although being opposites in many ways their sisterly bond was strong, they were still the best of friends. Yes the central plot of this story is the murder of Alice’s sister & it is horror but it’s still a fun kind of light hearted book with many horror pop-culture references sprinkled throughout. While having a moment in the ladies room of the courthouse Alice is knocked unconscious by a Sidney Prescott look-alike & when she regains consciousness she’s somehow back in that morning, 1 year ago.

Finding herself back in the past, in this time loop, Alice realizes she has an opportunity to change things. Blank spots in her memory start to get filled in, shedding a new light on that day & what led up to it, leaving her doubting what she thought she knew. This book is full of horror movie tropes & despite Alice being such a huge horror movie buff she somehow still makes all the silly cliche mistakes. Ending up back in the corn maze halloween night still unsure how to save her sister & who she was supposed to be saving her from.

Spoiler it’s a happy ending, able to find out the truth of that night which is what she needed to do in order to save her sister & change the future. I promise that despite my personal low rating it’s a good book, recommend for the avid YA reader.
