When She Was Me by Marlee Bush

We’re in rural Tennessee, on an isolated campground with twins Cassie & Lenora the permanent residents of cabin 2, the only other people staying at the campgrounds besides its owner. However after the owner dies someone new moves into cabin 1 & soon after new guests arrive to cabin 3. Sarah the new owner of the campgrounds has decided to reopen cabin 3 for guest rentals disrupting the sisters peaceful existence.

The story is given to us from both sisters povs, with chapters alternating from sister to sister, mixed in-between with chapters anonymously narrated. Cassie & Lenora are running from something that happened when they were younger, choosing to live in isolation, having minimal contact with the outside world. Tensions begin to rise in cabin 2, dealing with too much change & far too many new people moving about the once quiet campgrounds the twins are on edge. Things take a dark turn when the teenage girl staying in cabin 3 with her parents goes missing in the night. Having their quiet days disturbed brings back to the surface a lot of memories & feelings for the sisters adding to their already suspicious states. As the number of unexplained & strange events adds up the sisters begin to doubt themselves & each other. Are they being watched by a stranger hiding under the cover of night, has the past finally caught up, can the other truly be trusted or are they simply being haunted by their own memories.

Our anonymous narrator definitely adds a lot of confusion to the mystery, we don’t know who’s remembering & recounting the past in these moments & without knowing who how can we know where these flashbacks fit. & that’s the twist! Spoiler? No, maybe, a little. The twist that isn’t revealed until the very end, I did not see that coming at all. I love multi-mystery plots, we’re discovering what happened then while discovering what happened now, with multiple star players in the game.

I was entering a non-reading mood when I started this book, truly the only reason it took me so long to finish, because I was hooked I needed to know how this story was going to unravel! This is a debut novel & I’m very intrigued to read what else this author creates.

Thank you for joining me for another review. Happy Reading!
