Review: We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

I’m so glad this book is being tv adapted, it’s just one of those stories that will translate so well to tv. However, the main actress choice is probably going to stop me personally from watching it quiet honestly. She’s simply not my cup of tea. This is a book review though that’s neither here nor there, so let’s get into it!

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

  • Category – Paranormal Mystery Thriller
  • Length – 312 Pages
  • Read Time – 2 Days
  • GR Rating – 5 Stars

I wasn’t sure the direction this book would go when I started reading. I ended up with this book completely by accident as I was searching for another with the same name. The cover intrigued me, so here we are. While the story has a pretty even distribution of character engagement, Eve is definitely the main character. Her partner Charlie & the mysterious family are supporting cast. (& this is why Netflix’s adaptation casting is a deterrent for me, she’s central to the story)

Eve & Charlie have scored a deal on a beautiful Victorian style house in need of a little tlc. Determined to flip the house into it’s former glory they move in with plans to begin refurbishing as soon as possible. This is not a feel good happy go lucky story though, naturally the tide turns strange, quickly. One evening a family shows up at the doorstep having spontaneously decided to stop on their way thru the area in hopes of walking memory lane. The ‘dad’ Tom explaining this was his childhood home & he wanted to share it with his ‘wife’ Paige & their children. Although reluctant, people pleasing Eve allows them to come in for a ‘quick’ tour. Charlie has work commitments that have taken her away, leaving Eve alone for the 1st time in this new place. Remote mountainside location, snow storm, random family, the atmosphere is eerie.

Nothing quick about this visit.

Part paranormal mystery, part psychological thriller this book kept me on my toes. So many moving parts, it’s not really clear what’s actually happening, is this some kind of paranormal possession? Is it the house? The family? Both?! Is the house like a portal the ‘family’ uses to conduct their “business”, what actually is their “business”!? So many questions but that truly adds to the eerie tension throughout the story rather than taking away from it. I loved how easily the Mandela effect phenomenon was woven into the story as an integral part of the horror. As someone for whom a good memory & accurate recall ability is vital to my mental well-being, it’s anxiety inducing! The house seems to be changing around Eve with each passing minute the ‘family’ overstays their welcome. The scariest part is it doesn’t seem to just be the house that’s changing.

Psychological horror is quickly becoming my favorite genre, the mind-bending wtf moments is what thrills me in books these days. Highly recommend this 5 star read! As always happy reading & thank you for joining me for another review.
