I’m not saying this book wasn’t good, it was! I was absolutely engrossed in the story, turning page after page I could not put the book down once I got to reading. However, I guessed the plot very early on & I hate when that happens. Regardless, still a read I definitely recommend for the suspense thriller lover. Trying my best for no spoilers, let’s review.

Would you as the best lawyer in town defend your spouse if they were accused of murder? Would you as the best lawyer in town defend your spouse if they were accused of murdering their own paramour?… Tough ask..
Sarah Morgan is one of the top criminal defense lawyers in town, a distinction she has worked tirelessly hard for. Earning a powerful reputation within the firm she is partner in & around Washington, DC as an absolute rockstar in the courtroom. In her mid-thirties Sarah is content with the trajectory of her life, she has everything she’s wanted for herself at this point in her life. A successful career, a beautiful home & a happy marriage with her loving husband Adam.
The same cannot be said for Adam.
Adam Morgan is a writer, a currently struggling writer, unable to put the words together for his next book. His next book which he hopes will be his ‘big break’ as a writer, catapulting him into author fame. We get the impression that Adam is unhappy with not just his struggling career but his marriage as well. Feeling like their relationship has been sacrificed for Sarah’s career & resenting her for it.
As we get tidbits of the past we see how the relationship grew & then changed over the years. Trials & tribulations creating a rift they unfortunately weren’t able to overcome. Despite purchasing a cabin house together in hopes of spending more time as a couple just enjoying life, it quickly became Adams personal writing retreat in the woods, Sarah never having any time to spend outside of her office while building her career.
But Adam wasn’t spending his time in the woods writing, or alone.
As the story really gets going what should’ve been another regular day for the Morgans becomes a nightmare when a body is discovered at their cabin house. We follow along with Sarah, present day, as the body of Kelly Summers is discovered, in their bed at the lake house, brutally murdered. Stabbed multiple times & left for the cleaner to find, Adams dna all over the scene & body. As the story progresses we get alternating povs, getting the backstory of this love affair from Adams memories. Including the night Kelly was murdered. We go back in time with Adam as he investigates his own memories leading up to the present day. As his lawyer Sarah is privy to all of the information gathered by the police investigation, the heartbreaking tension of a wife getting intimate information & details about her husbands affair felt so real throughout the story. We’re with her as she tries to remain calm & composed sitting in an interrogation room across from her husband listening to him say he was having an intimate affair with another woman, in a home they share, for 2 years. We’re with her as she’s reading through the police report, detectives notes, autopsy report & good morning love note, now in evidence, her husband wrote to his lover, Kelly. We’re with her as she sheds repressed tears in the privacy of her office, questioning if she pushed her husband, the man she fell in love with, into seeking another woman.
Out on bail & confined to the cabin house, adamant of his innocence, Adam enlists the help of a young journalist & launches his own investigation to try to figure out who could be framing him for murder. Simultaneously Sarah is investigating Kelly’s past & every person she’s able to connect to her in hopes of casting doubt in the case & poking holes in the prosecutions story. This is how we get Kelly’s backstory, finding out that she was also married & had secrets of her own, including a surprise third lover? However confident that they’ll be able to convict Adam, the state is moving quickly & both Adam & Sarah know they’re short on time to unravel the truth.
Adam has been lying & keeping secrets.
Kelly has been lying & keeping secrets.
Sarah has also been lying & keeping secrets.
“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive” – Sir Walter Scott
This book is a meticulously twisted web of lies & although I did guess the truth of it pretty early on, the story was well written & engaging, I will definitely be reading book 2 “The Perfect Divorce”! As always happy reading & thank you for joining me for another review.
Hasta la próxima – V
