Review: The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak

Goodness gracious Frank. What an insufferable character, let’s review.

The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak

  • Category – Suspense Mystery Thriller
  • Length – 338 Pages
  • Read Time – 2 Days
  • GR Rating – 2.5 Stars

I had such high hopes for this book. Having already read & loved Hidden Pictures, also by this author, I was expecting another great read. Oh boy, was I disappointed.

The story had potential, a dad, Frank, estranged from his daughter, Maggie, invited to her wedding after 3 years of silence. There was a falling out, they do circle back to this later on in the book. Frank is hopeful this is his opportunity to mend things. Told from Frank’s pov, upon arriving to meet his new in-laws we immediately see how out of his element he is within this ultra-wealthy family. Having been a package delivery driver for 20 something years, he’s of a much more humble socioeconomic class. Maggie is marrying into the billionaire Gardner family, a complete surprise to Frank who wasn’t even aware of this relationship. Things are awkward from the onset.

Wedding weekend has arrived, Frank (somewhat unwillingly) brings his sister Tammy & her surprise foster child as his plus 1, plus another 1. The wedding is taking place in New Hampshire, at a luxury campground the Gardner family owns with accommodations for everyone. Upon arriving guests are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement to stay. We’re not talking a trifle single page, do not share non-disclosure. No, pages & pages & pages. Enough pages to make Frank think this family is involved in something suspicious. That turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. His son-in-law to be, Aiden, is behaving strangely, distant, quiet & generally un-engaged with the whole event. Mrs. Gardner, sheltered away in her room, looking out the window. Strange. As the wedding weekend progresses more suspicious & strange things happen. He finds out some questionable things & somehow manages to ignore everything while simultaneously sticking his nose in everything too. Franks character truly annoyed me, he came across as very naive & dimwitted. He must have had rose colored glasses on when it came to Maggie. Somehow he was the only one who couldn’t truly see her.

When Frank finally unravels what all has & is happening with Maggie & the Gardner family, he chooses to stay true to himself. Despite what it’ll mean for him & his family. I give his character points for being an upstanding honorable person, but he was still annoying! All in all, it was an ok book for me, the story itself was good. I wasn’t surprised by the reveal & disliked more than 1 character, which is why I rated just 2.5 stars.

As always happy reading & thank you for joining me for another review.

Hasta la próxima – V
