This story is perfectly summed up within the very title. Creepy. Let’s review.

The Creeper by A.M. Shine
- Category – Horror Fiction
- Length – 320 Pages
- Read Time – 2 Days
- GR Rating – 5 Stars
The elusive 5 star rating. This author definitely has my attention, with another book, titled Grace, expected to be published in 2026 I look forward to reading more of his works.
The Creeper is a different kind of “mystery monster” horror than that of The Watchers series also by A.M. Shine. The truth of this horror is even more sinister than I could’ve imagined. Sinister & revoltingly heartbreaking.
Researchers Chloe & Ben are chosen for a field research project at a remote village by Dr Sparling. Renowned within the historical academic space for his studies & work, Chloe & Ben are honored & excited to have been chosen. That quickly changes upon arriving to the small village, Tir Mallacht, isolated in the Irish countryside. The villagers are not welcoming or friendly, everyone pretty much ignoring or outright avoiding any kind of interaction with their visitors. All but one small (child) villager, who doesn’t shy away from talking, telling them a scary story. The story of the village’s curse. Part of me wonders if the child was sent to tell the story, given the truth of the legend, was it just her turn to stoke the fire.
“Three times you see him. Each night he comes closer..”
Creepy
Sure enough, they spot a creepy mysterious figure lurking in the shadows that night. All of the villagers ensure they’re indoors before sundown, locking down their homes & still the newcomers remain somewhat skeptical of the legend they were sent there to investigate. That is until they see the unknown sinister figure watching of course. Instantly spooked to their cores & fearing for their safety, Chloe & Ben begin taking this creepy legend much more seriously.
The atmosphere is so eerie! The extent of the villages’ isolation, no roads in or out, only accessible via a long unmarked hike. Devoid of any contact with the ‘outside’ world. Nowhere on any map, void of technological advancement, stuck in a time past with wary villagers. The three times rule ominous & threatening in the back of their minds. Legends are created, their fires fueled by the voices of the people who repeat them.
“Stories keep him alive…”
The build up to the reveal had a chill running down my spine. Spooky season is almost upon us & this is a perfect addition to the spooky season tbr. I actually read this book in October of 2024. (oops I’m playing review catch-up again) The true horror of this story is the origin & creation of this villages legend. This was a 5 star page turner for me. Truly chilling.
Thank you for joining me for another review, as always happy reading!
