This book actually brought a tear to my eye, I sometimes think about the things that may ail me when I reach my old age, & become truly depressed. There’s more than just mystery in this story. As I was searching up this book, doing my review prep, I found it was movie adapted in 2019! I will be looking for & watching the movie for sure. Let’s review.

There are a lot of characters in this book. As we are getting bits of story from different moments in the past, as well as current time many “faces” come into play. However, our most important character is Maud Horsham. Maud is married to Patrick, they have daughter Helen & son Tom, & Maud’s bff is Elizabeth. Maud has lived a long life thus far, she is in her 80’s now & starting to forget many things it seems. A small ensemble of people, with love for Maud, regularly check-in on her at home. Assisting with the menial day-to-day tasks, cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking light meals & the like. Maud is still physically capable of going to the store on her own, picking out her own groceries & carrying them back home. Except every time she does, all she seems to bring back are cans of sliced peaches.
One day Maud finds a small silver compact mirror in her friends garden, one that she recognizes from many decades ago. Unsure of how this compact came to be abandoned in the garden & immediately reminded of her dear friend Elizabeth. Where is Elizabeth? Triggered by the snippet of a memory she cannot shake nor fully grasp, Maud begins to obsess a little over Elizabeth & her whereabouts. Asking about if she’s been seen, walking by her home for a quick visit, trying to remember when was it actually that she’d seen her last, how long has it been? When Maud was a much younger woman her sister went missing, now present day her memories of this event are conflating with her memories of Elizabeth.
Spoiler, but not really, Maud has dementia. This is why she leaves her home to go to the store for 1 simple ingredient for lunch & returns with only canned peaches. People around Maud, including her daughter Helen seem to know of Elizabeths whereabouts but when she outright asks decide it best not to tell her. Unable to shake the feeling that something is deeply wrong Maud even goes to the police, seeking their help in finding her friend. Finding that silver compact set off a serious of events that ultimately does unravel an old mystery.
The ending of this book is so sad, heartbreaking but very worth the read. As always thank you for joining me for another review & happy reading.
