Review: Hotel Magnifique by Emily J. Taylor

I added this book to my tbr because the cover is aesthetically pleasing, as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews I’m an avid & proud cover judger, many a great books have ended up on my bookshelves because of their pretty covers. I loved reading this book & would love to see it translated to screen. Let’s get to the review.

Hotel Magnifique by Emily J. Taylor

  • Category – YA Fantasy Mystery
  • Length – 400 Pages
  • Read Time – 5 Days
  • GR Rating – 4 Stars

It’s been a while since I’ve loved a ya fantasy book, & while I almost past this book up for that very reason I’m glad I listened to my cover judgment instead because I loved this book, for being young adult.

In this book we’re introduced to a lot of characters, each as unique as the last, but our main characters are homesick dreamer Jani & the devastatingly handsome suminaire Bel. The Hotel Magnifique is a magical hotel that portals around the world, opening it’s doors to guests, offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy magic safely. In a world where suminaires are deemed dangerous & not welcome in many places, a magical vacation is truly once in a lifetime dream come true for many. The wealthy book extravagant rooms, purchasing ‘invitations’ into the magical world, however there are also the ‘lucky’ few who are chosen for a gratis invitation.

I envision the hotel as a mix between The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hogwarts & Hotel Del Luna. With rooms that magically create themselves in themes meant to wow guests, garden oasis rooms with sunny skies & babbling brooks. Opulent luxury bolstered by magic. This book would be beautiful on screen.

Jani just 17 years old & already responsible for herself & her younger sister Zosa envisions the hotel as a way out. An opportunity at a better, easier life for them. Ensuring they both get invitations to the hotel Jani is relieved & excited, planning a new future for herself & her sister. However things take an alarming turn pretty quickly once the hotel is on the move again. Desperate & alone she puts her trust in Bel but he has secrets too. As it turns out, all that glitters isn’t gold & the glitteriest of them all, the hotel & the hotels Maître. Jani discovers a disturbing secret about the hotel in her attempts to free her sister, prompting her to decide that in order to free her sister & herself, she’ll have to free everyone.

& of course Jani & Bel develop a relationship during all of this, it is ya fantasy after all. What’s a ya fantasy without a strangers to friends to fake enemies to lovers trope.

Ultimately I rated this book 4 stars because while I loved author Emily J. Taylors writing & the beautiful world she created in this book, it is still ya & as such had me rolling my eyes a little bit. Thank you for joining me for another review, as always happy reading!
