Again! Riley Sager does it again! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another surprise ending. Let’s review.

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
- Category โ Adult Mystery Thriller
- Length โ 349 Pages
- Read Time โ 3 Days
- GR Rating โ 4 Stars
We’re starting the story off somewhere in the middle, actress Casey Fletcher is back in her families lake house, hiding out at her mothers behest, hoping to avoid bad publicity after spiraling with alcohol jeopardizing her acting career. Casey spends her days mostly alone on the semi-secluded lake, drinking & watching her newish neighbors across the water. Former model Katherine Royce & her husband Tom purchased the home across the lake from her, intrigued by their newness & near perfect appearances Casey quickly falls into a habit of watching them from her back deck, with the help of binoculars, nightly.
One night Casey saves Katherine from drowning out on the lake & they develop a friendship, after Katherine goes missing shortly after their harrowing meeting Casey’s “casual” habit becomes a full-time obsession. The tension is thick throughout this story, intwined within the setting, mingling in-between every interaction she has with the other people staying at the lake. While Casey tries to unravel the mystery of the disappearance of her new neighbor & friend Katherine, we also find out what sorrows she’s drowning in alcohol. I was not expecting the paranormal twist, spoiler alert? or maybe I missed that in the synopsis but I didn’t think this was going to be that kind of horror. The thing is though, it is a paranormal horror but it’s also not because that was just 1 of the twists.

While the story isn’t really fast paced, the uncertainty of every piece of information as it’s all coming to us from an inebriated state, definitely adds a thriller aspect. We can’t know who or what to trust & believe when every truth is muddled in uncertainty & doubt. The one truth that is crystal clear is the one we’re given at the end, what memories Casey is drowning in liquor, & that is something that happened before the story even begins.
Finished this book in 3 days, again while it wasn’t “fast-paced” there was a steady progression that kept me turning pages. I was once again surprised when I thought I’d figured it out, definitely recommend for the mystery readers. Thank you for joining me for another review, happy reading.
