Review: Everything We Never Said by Sloan Harlow

*Adds book to “proof of multiverse” list* Another version of me must have gotten her hands on this book before I did because I could not get past the deja vu as I read. I could not get past the feeling that I’d somehow already read this book before, anyway let’s review.

Everything We Never Said by Sloan Harlow

  • Category – Dark YA Suspense Romance
  • Length – 320 Pages
  • Read Time – 10 Days
  • GR Rating – 3 Stars

This book is a young adult dark romance/suspense, so while there are themes of abuse, death & other heavy subjects it is still YA & doesn’t get too detailed. Ella Graham is now a senior in high school, a year that should have been the best in her high school career. However, still mourning the death of her best friend Hayley several months prior makes returning to school extremely hard. Everywhere she looks there are more reminders of her best friend & she finds herself unable to face her other former friends as the guilt eats away at her. Back at school Ella is assigned to a support group with the school psychologist, a group to which Hayley’s boyfriend Sawyer was also assigned.

Ella & Sawyer share in the loss of Hayley but they also share more, turns out Hayley wasn’t their only connection. While the growing feelings between them also serve to feed Ella’s guilt, she can’t bring herself to ignore them. Keeping their budding relationship secret, Ella & Sawyer start spending more time together, getting to know each other much more intimately. The story of what happened to Hayley unfolds slowly as the book progresses, we’re following along from both Ella & Sawyer’s pov’s, getting new memories as we get further into the now. I kind of love books with alternating character povs because it feels like getting a clearer, fuller picture of events in the timeline with each chapter.

Reluctantly helping Hayley’s mom clean out & pack up her room Ella stumbles upon her diary, taking it thinking Hayley would be mortified if her mother found it & read it. With no intention of reading the diary she takes it to stash away for safe keeping but soon finds herself carrying the diary to school with her, comforted by having something of her best friend close. Not long after taking the diary she does end up reading it & once she’s starts reading entries… well how can she stop, especially when the things she’s reading are alarming news to her. In the pages of Hayley’s diary Ella discovers she didn’t know her best friend as much as she thought, that her friend had secrets even from her. While reading the diary sheds light on Hayley’s last few months & days, it also creates a lot of confusion for Ella because Hayley only uses initials in her diary entries. As the story culminates we find out which of Ella’s suspicions & assumptions were right & which were way off base.

I rated this book a neutral 3 stars because while the story was good I rolled my eyes quite a bit at the characters youth driven mistakes. I’ve aged out of most YA, my literary tastes have changed over the last few years, YA books I really like are few & far between now. This one was pretty good tho. Thank you for joining me for another review, happy reading!
