This book read to me as part suspense thriller, part feminine rage & part crime satire. Yes, the subject is murder, no murder is not funny; yes, our protagonist Claire is a serial killer, no being a serial killer is not good, & yet I chuckled while reading this book. That’s the beauty of fiction novels, it’s ok to find the part-time serial killer protagonist likable & funny. I think Claires’ psychopathy is left up to the readers interpretation, we’re given some childhood backstory but not enough to really deduce one way or another wether her proclivity towards murder is a product of nature or nurture.
Claire believes her victims deserve it, they have wronged her in some way that merits her personal brand of retribution. She doesn’t just swing her hammer around willy nilly, Claire takes great care in the planning & preparation, of course how else would she prevent being caught. Murder is a crime after all & obviously Claire enjoys being a free woman.
Someone has been watching Claire. Someone knows Claires secret.
It seems Claire made a mistake, somehow, someone knows. Someone was watching her & she didn’t know. What exactly do they know; what evidence do they have; what do they want? Expectedly this unnerves Claire, she’s usually so careful, such a good planner, well prepared, it had to shake her confidence but also she knows what she’s done is against the law, of course. This is a very dry humor kind of funny, we’re with Claire as she lives a relatively mundane “normal” day to day life, in a ‘normal’ contemporary society. We’re with her as she attends a grief group & we meet & interact with other interesting characters thru her & it all seems ‘normal’. Maybe a bit quirky at times but “normal”, ya’know. However we know she also kills people, & the possibility of being next hangs in the air of every interaction she has like a thick fog, it’s the pink elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about, so definitely not totally normal.
I enjoyed this book, it was my work lunchtime read which is why it took so many days but it’s a short read at just over 300 pages. Definitely recommend for the dry humor type. As always happy reading & thank you for joining me for another review.
